Today I did the virtual @wflworldrun , running for those who can’t to raise money for spinal cord research
🏃🏻‍♀️
I had targeted to try to get to 8 miles before the catcher car would catch me, thinking it would be a nice speed workout to end my 70miles week.
🏃🏻‍♀️
So the way the race works is everyone around the world started at exactly the same time. For me that meant 2pm in Greece with temperatures in the 70s, so I was sweating in the first 5 minutes

I chose a route that took me 3 miles along the coast and to a little forest by the beaches of Ag.Apostoli which is one of my favourites and then laps around the forest until I finished
🏃🏻‍♀️
The theme of the race “running for those who can’t” really touched me. As I was approaching the 8 miles mark and sweating profusely and my body starting to hurt I thought to myself “goal achieved” I could stop now. But then I thought you know what? I really am bloody lucky that I can run and those who couldn’t would probably give anything to feel the pain I was feeling. So I stepped it up a notch and pushed further and ended up managing 12 miles. Thanks to @amandatriathlonandmore for water, cheers and photos 💗💗💗

I’m really excited about this virtual race!!!

As you know I am not normally a big fan of virtual races, to pay money to run on trails I would normally run on anyway, however this race is different!
*
You start running and then a virtual catcher car starts 30 minutes later at 14km/h : 8.69mph steadily increasing speed every half hour and through an app you download on your phone you keep on running until the car catches up with you!

You can run anywhere you like or join a local group and a predetermined route. Everyone starts at the same time 11:00 UTC / 2pm Greece on 9th May
*
The best part? 100% of entry fees and fundraising goes to spinal cord research projects supported by @wingsforlife

I’ll always remember my Mum growing up obsessed

I’ll always remember my Mum growing up obsessed with her stomach. She was a tall, beautiful, & vibrant woman but lacked self confidence all because of the size of her stomach. I would sit on the edge of the bed while she tried on different clothes, not liking anything because she looked too “fat”. She was constantly on a diet, watching her calories. The 80s media was filled with people who had the perfect slim and buff bodies showing us what “beautiful” looked like

Unfortunately, this stuck with me & even now, despite becoming a runner & leading a healthier lifestyle, the mood of my day is often dictated by how I perceive myself in the mirror & whether I think I look “fat” or not

The rational side of me knows that I am not fat by any stretch of the imagination & that beauty really does come from within rather than from our outer shells, but that doesn’t stop me having these dark thoughts. I was bullied at school and while this was tough to experience, I learned some valuable lessons about not caring what other people think, unfortunately, some days it’s like I am a bully to myself with some of the thoughts that I allow to run through my head. I have to remind myself to be kind. I wouldn’t accept anyone else treating me this way

I remember when I just started running, some 5 years ago. I was hanging out after a race & a girl came up to me & asked me how the race went. I asked her how she knew I ran? She replied that it was obvious as I had an athlete’s body. I just laughed at her. Even now I am unable to identify myself as an athlete. I just can’t see what others can. I still see the 11 year old girl with puppy fat who didn’t do anything sporty her entire life until she reached the age of 39

I am on a journey as I learn to love myself and embrace my strong. I try to turn the negative thoughts into positive ones, have compassion for myself & others & express gratitude for this strong body which has taken me on some pretty amazing adventures

A week ago, I stepped off the boat anxious and stressed. Each day I went running and explored new routes and slowly slowly, Crete started to work her magic and calm my soul. I can’t begin to describe the peace that washes over me every time I step out the door and am greeted with the royal blue skies, when I run down the coast and I listen to the waves crashing, the salty sea filling my nostrils and when I am in the mountains and the smell of wild thyme fills the air. I know everything will work out ok
